Made at the end of the wood shaft era, this Shaler 5-iron has a grip that telescopes up or down, to assist in fitting both men, women, and junior golfers for new clubs.

According to the built in ruler on the shaft under the grip, the length of the shaft can be adjusted between 30 3/4 inches and 35 1/2 inches.  The grip is a metal tube that includes a set screw on its back side.  The shaft has a thin length of bronze metal on the backside of the shaft under the grip, to which the set screw can be tightened.

The auctioneer has only seen one other Shaler measuring club (a driver) with an adjustable grip.  This telescoping shaft was covered under a US patent applied for by Francis Ford in May of 1930. A wonderful example of this fascinating mechanical club.
