The Matabie 27 1/2 solid gutty ball was incorrectly listed herein as an undocumented early 1900s rubber core ball with a gutta percha cover. It is actually a solid gutty ball and is listed in Kevin McGimpsey's most recent golf ball reference book, The Collectible Golf Ball Directory Folio 1. It's maker is not known.
Manufactured in the late 1890s with the same bramble pattern as the Vardon Flyer, including 7 brambles inside a circular raised name band, this ball is in unused condition with 95% original paint. There are a few minor paint cracks. When the ball is viewed in real life, those cracks are there but not nearly as noticeable as they are in these magnified images.
This ball is front row left in the group shot in the accompanying images.
