Willie Davis is famous for, among other things, being the first Scottish pro who worked as a professional in North America. In 1881 Royal Montreal hired Davis, from Hoylake.  He made £1 a week to make clubs and balls. According to the February 1902 issue of Golf (ny), "In 1891 Davis came to the United States and laid out the first course of the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. He took up his abode permanently in this country in 1893 as professional of the Newport Club, which position he retained until 1898..."  You can google WF Davis and read lots more about him and his prominent place in early American golf.

The 44" c. 1895 splice neck driver offered here was made by Davis.  The crown is stamped "W.F. Davis, Newport RI" along with the owners initials "HTP".  The original grip is missing, but most of the underlisting as installed by Davis remains. As a person can see in the images, the clubhead shows little use and remains in outstanding condition.  Its  fun for the auctioneer to just hold this club and experience the direct connection to Willie Davis, himself. If only clubs could talk!
