The simple stamp of "Wright & Ditson" in a script font across the top of the head is one of the very first wood markings used by Wright and Ditson.  It dates this club to 1893, as noted by J.M. Cooper in his book, "Early United States Golf Clubs by A.G.Spalding & Bros., Wright & Ditson and Bridgeport Gun Implement Co."

The minuscule "Wright & Ditson" stamp included on the 43 1/2" original shaft is most likely the first shaft stamp used by the company. The original sheepskin grip reveals some of the knitted wool underlining which is a unique signature element of early Spalding clubs.

George Wright was actually a baseball teammate of Albert Spalding, and Wright's company with Henry Ditson  (that specialized in golf and tennis equipment) became a partner to the Spalding company. As golf swept the United States, Spalding created a manufacturing alliance with multiple partners. While Spalding and Wright & Ditson looked like market competitors, the only difference in their equipment was the logos they bore!
