Stamped "Martin's England" on one pole and "Zodiac Patents" on the
other, this pair of Martins-Birmingham Ltd Zodiac balls strikes a strong pose
with their round studs! The lighter ball is British size and the smaller ball is American size. These balls are rare to begin with, let alone having one in each size.
Both balls have lost most of their original paint and still present well. There are no significant strike marks and their studs in circles pattern stand out a mile away.
A writer in the November 1927 Morning Post
described the Zodiac ball as follows, "Unless I am mistaken, the Zodiac was the first
ball made with a centre, a bag of viscous fluid, which was heavily
weighted with white lead or something of the kind."
One of these balls is middle row, right in the accompanying group image.
