Talk about special, this set is!  Sold in 1928 by Hillerich and Bradsby, both this 9 club iron set and pair of fancy face woods are in partitioned canvas carrying cases that accompanied certain clubs when they were sold.  The 8 Grand Slam irons fit in the 8 sleeves of the short canvas carry case. The pair of woods fit in a case that holds 3 clubs, so one wood is missing.

This set of irons, which include a matching 10 iron/putter, was sold as "hickory shaft set No. 8" in H&B's 1928-29 catalog and was "Matched, Registered, Indexed, & Balanced".  The catalog lists this set as a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, & 10, which is exactly what is in this set offered here.

The backs of the iron heads are marked "Fairway Iron" with the corresponding distance on the 1 through 4 iron, "Pitching Iron" with corresponding distance on the 5 and 7 iron, "Trouble Iron" with corresponding distance on the 8 iron, and "Putter" on the 10 iron. There is a great deal of writing on the back of each head and it is beautiful. They layout is strong, visual, and attractive.

This set was listed at $60 for the 8 clubs, or $7.50 each, which made them the most expensive hickory shaft irons H&B offered. Their individual price was over triple the $2 price of the Invincible irons offered later in the H&B catalog. The driver and brassie offered in this lot were even more expensive, going out the door at $20 per club! They were H&B's most expensive woods at the time and are seldom seen today.

These two fancy face woods are Hillerich & Bradsby's Grand Slam Pebble Beach model as offered in H&B's 1928 catalog.  Instead of having hickory shafts like the above irons, they have steel shafts covered with a light hickory pyratone sheath.  The heads are still in their original finish. The shafts still retain their original grips, gold-colored metal grip caps ("tips"), and grip trim rings.  All the irons also retain their original aluminum grip "tips" as well.
