The back of this c. 1900 mashie niblick is stamped "Ben Sayers" in Sayer's script handwriting, with nothing else stamped there to interfere with the prominence of the Sayers name.  Given that the back of the head bears only the Sayers name, this club could easily have been made for/used by Sayer's himself. The other stamps, "7 Mashie Niblick, Handforged in Scotland," are all on the sole.

As a youth, Ben Sayers spent his time training to be an acrobat, but after playing his first round of golf at the age of 16, he fell in love with the game. He quickly became a competitive golf professional, a popular and skilled instructor, and also a clubmaker. Starting with long nose clubs in the 1880's, he continued to make clubs in the 1890s and well into the 20th century.  He is responsible for a number of club designs such as the stop-um deep groove backspin iron, dreadnaught driver, and the jumbo driver.  He remains one of the great personalities of late 19th-early 20th century golf.

This club has its original 36 1/4" shaft stamped "B. Sayers Selected" and leather wrapped grip.

Condition is as shown in photographs.
