Clubs made by Willie Park Sr. have always been highly sought after given Park's former prominence as a player and his 4 Open titles. The clubs made by his younger brother Mungo, however, are far more rare.  Mungo was also a fine player and winner of the British Open, but golf was not always his thing.  It wasn't until 1874 when he won the Open, six months after his return from spending several years at sea.

This club has been cleaned up and restored. The original horn is no longer on the club.  Instead, a new horn made from two separate lengths of genuine horn has been installed, as shown in the images.  The work is good and the club looks okay in that regard.  The finish has been reworked, but the name stamp is all there including the "M." The face has been lightly sanded but not pushed back, as evidenced by the nicely hooked face and parallel long sides of the horn on the sole. There is a tiny bit of fill in three places along the leading edge, but it blends in well and is small. There is an old wood dowel in the heel, next to the face, that appears to be as old as the head itself. It's a "non-factor" to the auctioneer, as it is old, appears original to the club, and is neatly done. The 39 1/2" shaft and sheepskin grip are original. 

Overall, despite its less than perfect condition, there is much to like about this shapely club. If a person collects long nose club made by Open champions, this one checks a box that is very hard to do. A perfect one of these would typically realize a major number.  This example provides a less expensive but genuine alternative.
