While McDaid was working as a clubmaker in the 1890s, he changed his focus to the world of golf balls. In 1904 McDaid applied for a patent on a golf ball core winding machine. McDaid is listed as a golf ball maker with premises on Easter Road in the
Leith Post Office Directory for 1909-10 (with his home at 14 Restalrig
Terrace). The next year the entry is for Martin McDaid and Son, 326b
Leith Walk.
