This Forgan play club has its original 43” shaft and sheepskin grip.  The head was coated with a colored shellac or varnish which has worn off in a few spots on the crown, revealing the original blonde wood underneath.  The wood grain on the surface of the face has a slight amount of separation, most visible with the three dark lines out on the toe.  When you rub the face with your thumb, the face is smooth and the separations are undetectable.  But they are there.  Made nearly 140 years ago, the wood head is stable, and should remain so unless somebody takes the club to the range.

For all its imperfections, there is much that is right with this club.  From top to bottom the whipping, lead, horn, shaft, grip, etc. are original.  Even if not perfect, this play club is a worthy example of a long nose club made by one of the greatest clubmakers in the history of the game.
