The front of the envelope promotes these tees as "The world's first totally non-toxic golf tee, Photo/Biodegradable Fertilized Golf Tee." The back of the envelop is marked "distributed by Gary Player Golf Equipment," etc.
The first Biodegradable tee was invented in 1988 by a 13-year old boy who won $1000 for his idea in a contest. According to a July 2 Sarasota "Herald-Tribune" article:
"A 13-year-old kid in Colorado named Casey Golden came up with that idea as part of a class project in 1988. He invented an eco-friendly tee that melts into brown goo after 36 hours. It is safer on mowers and doesn’t break as easily as wooden tees. He made it from flour, water, fertilizer, peat moss, grass seed and applesauce. When it first came out, the tee was used at a PGA tournament and Golden was bombarded with orders."
