Want to own a GREAT set of classic irons? These are them. You can't do better than the 1967 jack Nicklaus VIP iron set by MacGregor. And the set offered here has it all, including the pitching wedge, sand wedge, and a #1 iron!

Jack Nicklaus both designed and played the 1967 VIP irons from 1966 to 1976. The original prototypes did not have the crowns on the faces and he played with them in 1966 and ultimately settled on the production model design with crowns on the faces in 1967. The 1967 model had a bronze ferrule. The early 1967 sets had "By Nicklaus" stamped in a large font on the back toe of the clubhead while the late 1967 sets had "By Nicklaus" stamped in a small font.  The heads on the 1968 VIP irons were the same as the late 1967 irons except they used a black ferrule. Like the late 1967 VIP irons, the 1968 VIPs used the small "By Nicklaus" font. Beginning with his Masters win in 1966 and ending with his 1975 PGA title, Nicklaus won 10 of his 18 major championships swinging his forged VIP's.  Talk about a historic set of irons!

Jack used a 67 VIP 1-iron during 7 of his 18 major championship wins, and he used it to hit two of the most memorable shots in his career.  His 238 yard approach to 20 feet at the 72nd at Baltusrol in 1967, which he then birdied to set a new US Open scoring record, and his into-the-wind tee shot, with gusts up to 35 mph, at the 219-yard 71st hole at Pebble Beach—which hit the pin and left Nicklaus with a tap in birdie to seal his third US Open. His 1-iron at Pebble Beach was a late 1967 model just like the one in this set—with the bronze ferrule and small "By Nicklaus."  A picture of this club can be seen at <https://golfweek.com/2015/05/28/jack-nicklaus-golf-museum-usga-room-photos-us-open/#jp-carousel-777822072>  According to "legend," MacGregor made only 35 or so early 1967 VIP 1-irons and 250-300 late 1967 VIP 1-irons.  So, while the 1-iron in the set is slightly different from the remaining irons in this set, both the 1-iron and the remaining irons match the clubs that Jack used during the height of his career!

The heads and shafts, which are "Tourney Taper" firm shafts, are in wonderful original condition.  The rubber VIP grips are replacements normally found on VIP sets made in the 1970s. The set is lightly used and still sparkles.  The neck numbers on the 2 through the PW begin with "OS", which identifies the set as being a custom set made by MacGregor.  The 1-iron and the SW do not have any neck numbers, but they show the same light use as the other clubs in the set.  If you are ready to live the dream, just throw this set in your bag and learn how good Nicklaus really was!
