Born in 1869, Robert Black Wilson learned clubmaking as an apprentice in the St. Andrews shop of Old Tom Morris. He developed a fine golf game and eventually traveled to the United States, where, in 1896, he became the professional at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, on Long Island, New York.  Spending time and working as a clubmaker in both Great Britain and the United States during the following years, he made many acquaintances and proved himself to  somewhat of a character.

This splice neck Wilson brassie is a most elegant club in about as near-to-mint condition as a 120-year-old wood can be. Nothing shows any use and the club is rich in color.  The perfect black R.B. Wilson stamp on the crown stands out beautifully against the perfect blonde finish. The sueded-leather grip is original, only the top whipping on the grip is possibly replaced.   The head is a bit longer than the typical bulger, but not as big as the early transitionals, consequently the auctioneer dates this stand-out club to the late 1890s.
