Nineteenth century gentlemen golfers often wore formal red jackets. Club Captains were undressed without one!  Unfortunately, few old red jackets remain.  Offered here is one from the Leasowe Golf Club marked "LGC" on the buttons and "John Bell, Liverpool, Ltd" on the collar label.

Leasowe Golf Club is a seaside course just down the street from Royal Liverpool Golf Club.  The legendary John Ball Jr, who won the British Open in 1890 and also won the British Amateur a record eight times (1888, 1890, 1892, 1894, 1899, 1907, 1910, and 1912) was a founding member of Leasowe and their Captain from 1891-1894. According to a kind member of Royal Liverpool who saw the pictures of this jacket and then contacted me, the Leasowe red Captain's jackets have a light gray collar and the Royal Liverpool red Captain's jackets have a dark green collar. It should be noted that in 1894, all members of Leasowe golf club were asked to wear a red jacket with the slate gray collar when playing the links.

The exterior of the jacket is made from heavy wool. The interior has a silk lining, some of which is quilted. There is some moth/wear damage to the wool on the inside of the jacket behind the lapels, as well as a few small tears and holes.  However, when you put on the jacket,  which is around a size 40/42, its exterior looks great! no real blemishes to be concerned about at all. Need a show-stopper for your display? Nothing like a red jacket to add electricity to a room!
