The Scottish Golf Club Manufacturing Company was the first to make clubs entirely by mechanized means.  According to the Novermber 3, 1894 issue of The Golfer, the only hand work in their entire operation was "in the tapering of the shaft to bring the balance and spring of each club into balance."

The company was registered as a joint stock company in March of 1894, but never made it past 1898.  Clubs made entirely by machinery were controversial despite the fact that SGCMCo clubs were solid and attractive. Tradition and the role of the hands-on clubmaker were very much a part of the game back in the 1890s.

This particular SGCMCo crescent-back iron is a mashie stamped "R.E. Wyatt", the name of the owner, on both the face and the shaft. "SGCMCo Ltd Edinburgh" is stamped on the back of the head. This club still has its original sheepskin grip.  The Scottish Golf Club Manufacturing Company did great work, but was simply well ahead of its time.
