Made by Tom Stewart, The back of this early 1900s "Stewart's Putter" putter is hollowed out in dramatic fashion.  The center of the hollow is marked "Made In Scotland. The back of the toe is marked "No 20225." This is a British patent number that dates prior to 1916, when British patent numbers each year would start over and begin with "1".  It wasn't until 1916 before British Patent numbers would continue in sequence through the years.

Stewart applied for a patent because he marked his club with the patent number assigned after his application was submitted.  However, he did not finalize his application (or the patent office turned his application down), so a patent was never issued.  But most golfer's back then would not know that. By marking his clubs with the patent number assigned at the time of his application, Stewart afforded himself the appearance of legal protection should any other clubmakers think of copying his design.

This club is in nice original condition, with original shaft and grip.
