First offered in 1932, Spalding's early wood-shafted Robert T. Jones Calamity
Jane putters were made for only three years. Most of the Calamity Jane putter produced by Spalding during the early 1930s had a dull chrome finish. The Spalding Jones CJ putter offered here was also made during the 1930s except it is a "Stainless" model. Only a small percentage of Spalding CJ putters had a stainless finish and were so marked. Unlike Spalding's standard Robert T Jones Calamity Jane putters, the stainless models typically have a line-scored face just like the one on this putter.
The Stainless versions were sold in the UK. Evidence of this is the Whitcome No 2 spiraling, canvas-backed rubber grip on this club. It was made and sold in the UK.
The original shaft measures 34 1/2 inches in length. The head is extremely clean and does not show any bag wear at all. A beauty!
For a non-stainless steel version of this club, see lot 28. To read much more on the history of Jones's
Calamity Jane, see TCA2 v1 p145-147.
