This oil painting is most likely of a Scottish links course such as North Berwick. It is signed by the artist "Frank R. Woods." When originally listing this piece, the auctioneer made a mistake and noted that the artist was Frank W. Wood. This painting can even be found on the internet where it is described as having been painted by Frank W. Wood. (Frank W Wood is a British artist of note for painting marine subjects,
landscapes, portraits, and a few golfing scenes.) However, upon closer inspection of the signature, the middle initial is an "R," not a "W," and there does appear to be an "S" at the end the last name. The auctioneer was unable to uncover any information about Frank R Woods. Even so, the painting is older and it's very nice.
The painting itself measures 19 1/2" x 15 3/4" tall. The painting in its gilded frame measures 23 1/2" x 19 1/2" tall. Early 20th century golf paintings rarely come onto the open market, and the fact that this is a good sized oil painting as opposed to a watercolor is even better.
