This Ping Scottsdale B66 Balnamic putter was produced in the early
1960s by Karsten Solheim and his son John in what is now Paradise
Valley, AZ. It was built in the garage of Karsten's home, part of which
included John's bedroom. The prior owner built this room, complete
with a window facing the inside of the garage, to use in a dog grooming
business. After John had finished his high school homework and
gone to bed, Karsten would often come into the garage, knock on John's
window, and together they would work making putters on into the night.
For more info on the Scottsdale garage, see And The Putter Went Ping page 56.
This B66 remains in superb original condition, with its 33
7/8" original shaft, "Tuned Ballnamic" shaft band, Informer grip and
grip collar.
The shaft also has Karsten's double bend at the grip,
tilting the grip 1. well back away from the target and 2. towards the golfer (as seen in the two accompanying images of the shaft/grip). This is an outstanding feature on this club. The
genesis of Karsten's bent, angled grip is covered in great detail in
Chapter 3 "The Bent is Meant" in And The Putter Went Ping. His run-in with the USGA over the angled grips is included in Chapter 4.
