Archie Simpson 3-club Set: Cleek, Mashie and Niblick
Archie Simpson (1866 – 1955 ) was the youngest of the Simpson brothers and arguably the best golfer. He probably had the most success as a golfer whilst his eldest brother Robert was the businessman. He was runner up in the Open championship in 1885 and 1890. A 1903 newspaper puts him in Aberdeen where he was professional at Royal Aberdeen, Balgownie between 1894 and 1911.
This set of three irons all ave smooth faces and are marked with matching stamps that read "Archie Simpson, Aberdeen, Warranted Hand Forged." They have their original shafts and replacement sueded leather grips that match up well to the period. Once upon a time, three irons—cleek, mashie, and niblick—were all that many golfers used, but it can be tough to find such c.1900 matching sets. Golfers often built their sets club by club.
Niblick 37 1/4"; Cleek 37 3/4"; Mashie 36 1/4"
