Patented by William W. Davis in 1904, this Sprague putter was made by G.S. Sprague and sold by the Bridgeport Gun Implement Company.  This mechanical putter can be adjusted for use left-handed, right-handed, croquet style, or even shuffleboard-style.  To adjust the shaft, the locking ball joint mechanism in the center of the head has to be unscrewed.  This is done by holding the head firmly in one hand while turning the hosel with the other hand.  After the ball joint becomes loose, the shaft will swivel in any direction.  Once repositioned, the shaft is locked in place by holding the head and turning the hosel in the opposite direction. This swiveling mechanism provides a wide array of positions for the golfer to choose from. Even today, the shaft will tighten nicely in whatever position it is placed.

The aluminum head is in great condition. The face scoring is still deep and clear, along with the stamping on the crown: "B.G.I. Co Agents / G. S. Sprague Patent."  The 34" shaft and leather-wrapped grip are original.  The club is in great working condition. A wonderful example of a 115 year-old mesmerizing mechanical marvel!
