F.H. Ayres was once one of the largest retail outlets for sporting goods in the UK, dating back to the early 1800s. Ayres began selling golf clubs by the 1880s.  Initially, at least, the clubs Ayres sold were by independent clubmakers who marked the clubs with the Ayres name.

This putter is one such example.  Its 35 1/2" original hickory shaf ttill has its original sheepskin grip.  The head measures  but 1" in face depth, 5 1/4" in length, and 1 15/16" in width.  Eveything from the finish to the components used to make the head appears to be original. A small piece of the horn has broken off at the tip of the toe.  The shaft has a notable warp to it, as shown in the one of the images.

Note that the shape of this head and the 1" face depth would normally indicate that this club was made prior to the 1880s, but it is not known when Ayers first sold clubs.  What is well known is that they were selling clubs during the 1880s.
