This 1A no model (the putter is a 1A but not stamped 1A) is in outstanding original condition. The original brown leather wrap grip is clean. The original "T" grip cap is there as well.  The 1A no models were the earliest production putters Karsten made, dating to late 1958 and early 1959. Their hosels are located more in the center of the head than the hosels on the typical Redwood City putters marked "1A." They are mostly made with leather wrap grips while the 1A's are often found with rubber Golf Pride Informer grips which Karsten began using in mid 1959.

The leather-wrap grip has its original black trim tape. As described in great detail in And The Putter Went Ping, these grips could survive nuclear winter.  They took a couple of days to make, including drying time and a significant amount of work, and were engineered to be exceedingly durable.

Karsten Solheim, with the able help of his teen-age sons Allan and John, made this putter by hand in their Redwood City, California, garage.  Redwood City Ping putters are now iconic. They unleashed the creative genius of Karsten Solheim, the man who changed how the entire clubmaking world designed and produced golf clubs.
