This 1996 US Amateur Pumpkin Ridge Flag was autographed by Tiger Woods, but not in the normal way. I will let the consignor, who was a member of the press at that event, explain the unique story about Tiger's signature on this flag:
"I’m one of maybe 5 media at the 1996 U.S. Am and so, Tiger being Tiger, he wins. After the press conference, in the hall (I can remember it like it was yesterday) I asked if he would sign the flag. It was like my fifth golf event and first U.S. Am. He grabs it, signs it and run off. I don’t look at it and actually never look at it until years later. He signed the back of the flag."
As fate would have it, where Tiger signed on the back of the flag turned out to be "perfect." As you can see, the flag in the first image is shown with the back corner folded over onto the front of the flag in order to display Tiger's autograph. This could be easily accomplished permanently when framing this flag. With the flag framed with the signed corner folded over, the attention of all who view the flag will be drawn right to Tiger's signature - and the story of its creation. Note that If the flag were to be displayed completely flat, front-side up, his signature would appear backwards as it shows through the front of the flag. See the 2nd image. This is not just a unique flag, in many respects it's quite special.
The two pieces of a ball mold shown in the first image are not included with this lot, but they are available as their own lot in this auction.
This pin flag along with all the other flags in this
auction were acquired in person, at the course/event, by a lifelong member of the
press. He is now divesting his incredible collection so others might enjoy. All
signatures guaranteed authentic.
