Made by William Currie & C0., the Eclipse is one of the earliest gutty balls to be made from a mesh-pattern mold. A few different versions were made prior to 1900. This one matches the pattern of the Eclipse ball in an 1887 ad, including the distinct "+" in each pole.
As shown in one of the images, there are two deep gouges next to one of the poles—the one with a small drilled hole which was likely installed to display the ball. In one sense it is quite interesting to view a gouge and see that its all black just like the surface of the ball. Such is the nature of a solid gutta percha ball. Despite the gouges, the ball will still display well. Just position the better side up.
