The firm of McEwan & Son was operated by Douglas McEwan--grandson of famed McEwan clubmaker/founder James McEwan--and Douglas' son, Peter McEwan (named after Douglas' father). Their reputation as longnose clubmakers was known far and wide. At a certain point in their business, however, the firm began to stock irons. The heads of these clubs were forged by a cleekmaker and then shafted and sold by McEwan & Son.
This iron would have been sold in their shop in Musselburgh. The cleekmaker who made the iron for the McEwan firm did not bother to include his own cleekmark symbol, such as an x or a flower or some other small design, as cleekmark symbols were not common during the 1880s when this club was made. The head bears only the stamp "D. McEwan & Son / Musselburgh." It appears to be re-gripped, but the existing grip matches the period extremely well.
Original shaft measures 39 1/2".
Condition is as shown in photographs.
