The 35" McEwan short spoon offered here dates circa 1880. It measures 1 1/8" in face depth, 6" in head length, and 2 1/8" in head width.  The face is well lofted with a pronounced curve from heel to toe.  The stout shaft and neck whipping are original as is the sheepskin grip.

The head on this club shows notable bag wear.  The face on this club shows a great deal of wear/distress. It has had some type of material applied to the face to help smooth the wear out and solidify the wood. The repair has done those things discretely, although he wear to the face is still clearly visible.  Back in the day, when a face began to weather, crack up, and break down, the damaged wood would be cut out and a leather patch installed.  The current repair which appears to be modern, simply sought to make the club presentable and as natural looking as possible without cutting into it.

After reading the above, it might be easy to think that this club has little merit, but it does. There is still much that is right with this club.  It is still an authentic long nose club in its original finish.  It has a large, long head and a nicely hooked face and clear McEwan stamp. Instead of filing off all he worn wood, which would have altered the club significantly and removed a great deal of the original curve given to the face, the repairman preserved the original curve.  That is by far the better option, as it preserves the clubmaker's original design.  It's still a genuine old McEwan short spoon.  Yes, it has major aches and pains, but it still has lots of character and makes for a nice budget acquisition.

This club is on the far right in the accompanying group image.
