Golf art from 120 years ago is extremely hard to locate, and then its not cheap when found. Here we have an original ink and watercolor piece of folk art that is charming in its own right. The golfer might look like his swing is bad, but it is not! He is in the correct position at the top of his backswing for a golfer in 1900. Just check out the bent left elbow and flying right elbow on the golfer on the 1880s sculptural clock in this auction.
"Golf" is hand written underneath the golfer as it was one painting of a portfolio of work dating to the period of 1890-1905. The artist Samual Cole, of 8 Ward Lane, Glasgow, Scotland, also painted other sports figures that were originally part of his portolio. Three such paintings of other sportsmen are shown for reference at the end of the accompanying images. Two of these paintings are dated 1904. Cole's name and address are on the cover of his portfolio. The Golf painting is also shown before it was framed.
This painting has been mounted and beautifully framed, as has the letter of authenticity to the consignor. The painting itself measures 8 1/2" wide by 11 1/2" tall. The frame measures 16" wide by 20" tall.
This charming and whimsical early 20th century folk art painting hung on a wall would add panache to any decore.
