Devised and sold directly by Fred Saunders, a well respected London clubmaker and golf professional, the Saunders Straight Line putter provides a dramatic extension on the back of an aluminum head.   A 1920 Golf Illustrated ad for this putter reads: "Reduce your Handicap! This is now comparatively easy if you play with a "Saunders Straight Line Patent aluminum putter (Registered Design 672,159) which gives you a true line to the hole. . . . Write for terms : Fred Sauncers, Highgate Golf Club, London, N."

The sole of this club is marked "X Upright Lie" and "US Patent 354265" in addition to its British registered design number and the number "844" (possibly a production number?). The crown is stamped "Fred Saunders, Highgate N."

This club has been used and shows light bag wear to the soft aluminum head.  Much of the original face scoring, which was light to begin with, has worn away.  Even so, the club presents wonderfully well as can be seen in the accompanying images.  All writing is clear. The leather wrap grip is original as is the 34 1/2" shaft. An excellent piece.
