C.B. MacDonald was a giant figure in early American golf.  He built the first 18 hole course in America, helped to form the USGA and served as its first vice-president. He won the first US Amateur.  He also designed a number of other early golf clubs, such as the Chicago Golf Club which has host a number of US Opens. He partnered with Seth Raynor to design and layout Shinnecock Hills Golf Club along with a number of other great venues.

This book details many early golfers, the beginnings of the USGA, early clubs and balls, golf architecture, and much more.  It is widely hailed as one of the most important books on the history of golf in America according to Donovan and Jerris.  According to Joe Murdoch, the father of modern day golf book collectors, Scotland's Gift is “one of the real masterpieces of golf literature.”
