in 1890 Willie Park Jr.'s 1890 British patent No. 16862 covered his diamond mesh golf ball. That ball had a tight diamond pattern over its entire surface. This mashie, made by Park Jr and faintly marked with his straight line "Wm Park, Maker, Musselburgh" stamp, also has a tight diamond pattern on its face. This scoring was not added but was pressed into the face when the club was originally made.
Park was a prodigious inventor of different club designs. This one of his rarest creations complete with an old leather-wrapped grip and 36 1/4" shaft. The Park diamond mesh golf ball shown is not part of this lot.
