Here's a club the auctioneer has never seen before, and it is quite different.  A prior owners tag on this club called it "The Whale." It is easy to see why.  Compared to early steel shafted drivers from the 1920s and 30s go, this clubhead is as big as a whale, and from a few angles it kinda looks like one!

Its 43" early steel shaft is original and has a bore through neck, where the tip of the shaft is visible next to the metal sole slip. The metal sole slip is integral with the face metal face.  This singular metal piece is held in place by three screws in the sole.  Also unique to this driver are the deep vertical grooves in the face insert, which in and of themselves, guaranteed that this club would be a wild one, accentuating any hooks or slices the golfer might hit.

While it has at least a new coat of varnish, the head itself shows nice original workmanship, with the steel face insert/sole slip is well made and beautifully mitered in place.  There is no lead in the back of the head because it is plenty heavy and does not need any.

I've no idea who made this club, and believe the chances are quite low that I will ever see another one.
