A picture, it has been said, is worth a thousand words, but neither a picture nor a thousand words will adequately describe a Limbershaft.  Only when waggled does a a Limbershaft reveal its exceptional flexibility.  Suffice it to say that these shafts are really whippy, which is why they are often referred to as buggy whip shafts!

Limbershafts were covered under two patents issued in 1928 to Carl Mensing of Florida.  Nine length-wise pieces of wood—eight pieces of rattan surrounding a square hickory core—make up the shaft itself.  Varnished, braided thread completely encases the shaft so the nine pieces of wood are visible only at the butt end of the grip.  Most of the  Limbershaft shaft label applied just below the grip remains.

The original varnish on this head has flaked off of most of the head, but the head is not dented and still presents well.  The shaft in this particular driver has a distinct bow, as is often the case when these clubs are found today. This club still retains its flexibility and is guaranteed to bring a big grin to the face of anyone who waggles it.
