Irons with face inserts were introduced in the 1890s, and the most famous example is Spalding's Cran Cleek patented by James Cran.  The Cran cleek offered here is stamped "The Spalding Cran, Pat. June 8, 1897' on the back of the head.  The original shaft is stamped "The Spalding". The shaft is solid, but there is an inch of whipping at the base of the shaft, most likely to assist in repairing a small hairline crack.  The grip is a replacement sueded leather grip consistent with the era when this club was made. The head itself is in great condition.  The wood insert, held in by two screws on the back of the head, is original and solid.
